RADON
What is Radon?
Radon is a poisonous gas that comes from the earth which is said to be the second leading cause of lung cancer. Spokane and the surrounding area is known as being a hot spot for radon gas. When you are purchasing a home you may want to have the house tested for high radon levels. That way, if there is a dangerous level of radon, you have an opportunity to either negotiate with the seller to get that fixed, or terminate the transaction to find another house if radon presence would be a deal-breaker.
A radon test can be done by a home inspector in most cases. That cost is usually about $100.00. There are also radon test kits available at hardware stores for about $25.00 if you would be the type to choose to “DIY” it after closing. The only caveat to doing the test later is that you would not have the ability to have the seller correct the problem, as you would be doing the test yourself after you move in.
You can find more information about radon on the EPA's website.
